Heydar Aliyev International is thirty minutes from the centre. After check-in, walk the Baku Boulevard, a landscaped promenade running several kilometres along the Caspian, where the three Flame Towers change colour behind you all evening. Little Venice, a set of canals cut into the park, runs gondolas until ten.

Morning inside Icherisheher, the UNESCO-listed walled old city — the twelfth-century Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, both within ten minutes' walk of each other. Then the Heydar Aliyev Centre, Zaha Hadid's building with no straight lines anywhere in it. In the afternoon you drive out to the Absheron peninsula for the Ateshgah fire temple, once tended by Indian traders from Multan and Punjab, and Yanar Dag, a hillside of natural gas that has burned continuously for centuries.
Highlights
An hour south along the coast to Gobustan, where more than 6,000 rock carvings of hunters, boats and dancers were cut into the boulders over 40,000 years. A separate track, reached by Lada 4x4 because nothing else survives it, leads to a field of cold mud volcanoes that bubble grey clay a metre at a time. Stop at the cliffside Bibi-Heybat mosque on the way back.

A long but beautiful day — three and a half hours north-west into the Greater Caucasus, past the Nohur lake with its drowned trees, to Gabala. The Tufandag cable car runs in three stages to about 1,900 metres, where the air is alpine and the valley falls away behind you. Lunch is a Caucasian spread of dolma, saj and fresh tandir bread before the drive back.

Breakfast and check out, with a last hour in the Nizami Street shopping arcade if the flight allows. Baku caviar and Azerbaijani saffron both need a receipt for Indian customs. The airport terminal, designed as a set of timber cocoons, is worth reaching early just to look at.

Yes — Baku has a well-established Indian restaurant cluster around Nizami Street and the Fountain Square area, several of them pure vegetarian. Azerbaijani food itself is easy for Indians: plov, dolma, saj and tandir bread are all familiar in shape.
It is seven hours of driving in total, split by the cable car and lunch. If that is too much we swap it for the Shahdag half-day or a slow morning at the Carpet Museum and Highland Park, and refund the difference at net.
