Land at Noi Bai, where your pre-approved e-visa is stamped, and drive forty minutes into the Old Quarter. The thirty-six guild streets each still sell what they were named for — Hang Bac is silver, Hang Ma is paper. Dinner is your own; the bun cha at Dac Kim on Hang Manh is the dish Hanoi is actually known for.

A guided day through the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum complex, the stilt house, the One Pillar Pagoda and the Temple of Literature, Vietnam's first university, founded in 1070. After lunch you cross to Hoan Kiem lake and the Ngoc Son temple on its island, reached over a red wooden bridge. The day closes with a cyclo ride through the Old Quarter and the Thang Long water puppet show.

Two and a half hours east on the new expressway to Tuan Chau, then aboard a wooden cruise junk for the night. The boat sails past 1,600 limestone karsts to Sung Sot cave, stops at Titop island for the 400-step climb to the viewpoint, and drops kayaks at Luon cave in the afternoon. Lunch and a seafood dinner are served on board, and your cabin has a private balcony.

Tai chi on the sundeck at dawn if you can manage it, then brunch as the boat returns to harbour. Drive back to Hanoi for the afternoon flight to Da Nang, ninety minutes down the coast. Evening on the Han riverfront — the Dragon Bridge breathes fire and water at 9 pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

The Ba Na Hills cable car climbs 5.8 km in twenty minutes — one of the longest single-span rides in the world — to the Golden Bridge held up by two vast stone hands, the French Village and the Fantasy Park. Come down mid-afternoon and drive on to Hoi An, where the old town closes to traffic at dusk. You take a lantern boat on the Thu Bon river and release a paper candle on the water.

A last morning at the Marble Mountains, five limestone hills between Da Nang and Hoi An, with a lift to the Huyen Khong cave and its shaft of light through the roof. Back for lunch on My Khe beach, then the transfer to Da Nang International for the evening connection home.

No, but it is fussy. The photograph must be a plain scan of your face with no glasses and no white border, and the passport bio page must be a clear colour scan. Approval usually takes three to five working days. We file and track it for you.
The Quang Ninh port authority suspends sailings in storms, most often between July and September. If that happens we put you in a Halong shore hotel of the same tier and run a day cruise if the bay reopens; if it does not, the cruise cost is refunded to you at net.
Less than people fear. Vietnamese Buddhist "com chay" restaurants are everywhere and entirely vegetarian, and every hotel breakfast has fruit, noodles and eggs. The point to watch is fish sauce, which goes into most dishes by default — we brief the guide to order without it.
